User Personas: Admin
Market areas let you organize projects and people by region, division, or branch, and then use those assignments to keep each team focused on its own work. Projects can belong to a market area, users can be assigned to one or more market areas, and features like Scheduling use those assignments to limit and filter what each user sees.
For additional information on Market Area visibility throughout eSUB, see Market Area Visibility: Who Sees What
This article covers creating and managing market areas in Company Settings, assigning market areas to users, and how those assignments affect what users see. For managing users generally, see Create and Manage Users and Crew Members.
You will need Admin access to Company Settings to create and manage market areas.

What Market Areas Do
- Projects can be assigned a market area, which you can use for filtering and grouping in reports and logs.
- Users, Crew Members, and Contacts can be assigned to none, one, or multiple market areas.
- Scheduling respects those assignments: the schedule board limits results to the user's assigned projects and market areas, and market areas are available as a filter and a time-off scope.
A User, Crew Member, or Contact set to ALL MARKET AREAS, and a Project set to GLOBAL, is available in every Market Area and thus all Reports and Schedule filters.
When Market Area Fields Appear
Market area fields, columns, filters, and chips are shown only when they are useful, so logs and documents stay uncluttered for organizations that do not use market areas. What appears depends on how many market areas your organization has defined:
- No market areas defined: market area columns, filters, and chips stay hidden across logs and documents, and eSUB behaves as if the feature is not in use.
- One market area defined: some market area elements remain hidden because there is nothing to narrow. For example, the Scheduling Market Areas filter does not appear when the company has fewer than two market areas, or when the signed-in user is assigned only one.
- Two or more market areas defined: market area columns, filters, and scoping become fully active. In Time Management, market area features and filters require at least two defined market areas before they appear.
The exact threshold varies by log and document type. If you do not see a Market Areas column or filter somewhere, it usually reflects how many market areas exist, not a missing permission. See Why don't I see a Market Areas column or filter? in Market Area Visibility: Who Sees What.
A version of this can be found as a downloadable PDF at the bottom of this article. For more information see Market Area Visibility: Who Sees What
Create and Manage Market Areas
You create and manage market areas in Company Settings. Each market area has a number, a name, and an availability status.
- Select Settings on the global navigation menu, then select Market Areas under Hierarchy in the Company Settings slide-out menu.
- On the Market Areas tab, select the Actions button, then select Add Market Area.
- Enter a Number and a Name for the market area.
- Leave the Available toggle on so the market area can be assigned to projects and users, or turn it off to retire a market area without deleting it.
- Save the market area.
The Market Area tab lists every market area with its Number, Name, Company Name, Address, and Available status. Company Name and Address are read-only in the grid; edit them through the Edit Details panel.
- Use the search bar to find a Market Area, and select a column header to sort or filter the list.
- To edit a market area: select the three-dot menu on its row, then select Edit Details. A panel opens where you can change the market area's number, name, and availability, along with its company name and address.
- To remove a market area: select the three-dot menu on its row, then select Delete.
Only market areas with Available toggled can be selected when assigning to projects or users. Toggle a market area to off instead of deleting it if you want to keep its history but stop new assignments.
A market area's Company Name and Address can be used as the letterhead on PDFs generated for projects in that market area, so each region's documents carry its own office information.
The Assign Projects/Users/Crew Members/Contacts tabs at the top of this screen let you assign market areas in bulk. See Bulk-assign market areas to users.
Assign Market Areas to a User
Users include a Market Areas field on the user record:
- Open the user from the Users log and select Edit.
- In the Market Areas field, start typing and/or pick from the multi-select drop-down menu. Only market areas marked as Available appear in the list.
- Save the user.
The field is optional. To clear it, select the first entry in the picker, ALL — All Market Areas, which removes any market areas already picked and leaves the user unrestricted.
Market-area changes take effect the next time the user logs in. If a user indicates a report or the schedule filter didn't update after a change, have them log out and back in.
Assign Market Areas to a Crew Member
Crew Members include a Market Areas field on their crew member record:
- Open the crew member from the Settings > Resources > Crew Members log and select Edit.
- In the Market Areas field, start typing and/or pick from the multi-select drop-down menu. Only market areas marked as Available appear in the list.
- Save the crew member.
The field is optional. To clear it, select the first entry in the picker, ALL — All Market Areas, which removes any market areas already picked and leaves the crew member unrestricted.
Assign Market Areas to a Project
Projects include a Market Areas field on the Project Info Page:
- Select the Project from your project log and then select Settings > Project Info
- Select Edit from the Action button
- In the Market Area field, start typing and/or pick from the drop-down menu. Only market areas marked as Available appear in the list.
- Select Save to save to the project.
The field is optional. To leave the project without a market area, select the first entry in the picker, GLOBAL — Accessible in All Market Areas, which keeps the project visible in every market area.
A new project does not inherit the market areas of the user who creates it. The Market Area field starts empty (global) and is only set here on Project Info or through bulk assign.
Assign Market Areas to a Contact
Contacts include a Market Areas field on the contact record:
- Open the contact from the Contacts log and select Edit. Alternatively select Edit from the 3-dot menu on the log.
- In the Market Areas field, start typing and/or pick from the multi-select drop-down menu. Only market areas marked as Available appear in the list.
- Save the Contact.
Bulk-assign Market Areas to Users, Crew Members, Contacts and Projects
To avoid editing users one at a time, use the bulk assign grid on the market area's Assign Users/Contacts/Crew Members/Projects tab. Pre-existing projects, users, crew members, and contacts can also be bulk assigned using corresponding tab.
- Open the Assign Users/Contacts/Crew Members/Projects tab. All users appear in a grid with Employee No., Name, Email, and Market Areas columns. Use the search bar or column filters to filter the list.
- Projects appear in a grid with Number, Name and Market Area columns.
- Crew Members appear in a grid with Employee No., Name, email and Market Areas columns
- Contacts appear in a grid with Business Name, Name (of contact), email and Market Area columns
- To change one user/contact/project inline, click their Market Areas cell and pick from the drop-down menu.
- To change many at once, check the rows you want.
- The button updates to reflect the count, for example Bulk Assign 6 Selected.
- With no rows checked, the button reads Bulk Assign Visible and operates on every user/project currently shown after your search or filter.
- Click the bulk assign button, pick the market areas to apply, and review the impact summary modal:
- How many users/contacts/crew members/projects get a new assignment
- How many have an existing assignment overwritten
- How many already have the selection.
- Select Assign. The button only enables when at least one user would actually change.
- Rows with no market areas show the ALL MARKET AREAS chip (or GLOBAL for projects) rather than an empty cell, and the bulk assign dialogs name that choice as well.
- On the Assign Projects tab, Bulk Assign can also set the selected projects to GLOBAL, which removes their market area entirely.
How Unrestricted Records Display: ALL MARKET AREAS and GLOBAL
eSUB labels records that are not restricted to any market area, so an empty Market Areas field never looks like missing data:
- The Users, Crew Members, and Contacts logs show a green ALL MARKET AREAS chip in the Market Areas column when a record is not restricted to any market area. The same chip appears in the Market Areas field on View User, View Crew Member, and View Contact.
- The Projects log shows a green GLOBAL chip in the Market Area column for a project that does not belong to a market area. Project Info shows the same chip followed by "Accessible in All Market Areas".
- Column filters and exports match what is shown on screen.
On the Access Level tab of a user record, a project with no market area shows ALL MARKET AREAS rather than GLOBAL. Both labels mean the same thing: the project is not restricted to any market area.
Market Area Limits in Scheduling
Scheduling is where market-area assignments do the most work:
- The schedule board limits results to the signed-in user's assigned projects and market areas.
- A Market Areas filter narrows the board further. It is hidden when:
- The Company has fewer than two market areas
- The user currently logged in and viewing is only assigned one Market Area.
- Time-off can be scoped to a whole market area (for example, a regional holiday), which marks the day off on every project in the area.
For details, see the Scheduling article.
